EASTERN CAPE LAUNCHES OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SAFETY SERVICES

A TWO-DAY launch of the Eastern Cape Occupational Health Safety Services is currently under way. The event started on March 22, 2001 where
different provincial departments gave inputs on their involvement in implementation of Occupational Health Safety Services.

The launch will serve sensitise the people of the province and employers about the importance of ensuring a healthy and safe environment in
the workplace.

The need to introduce Occupational Health and Safety in institutions and departments was identified in 1994 and was outlined in the
Reconstruction and Development Programme to ensure the saftey for employees in various sectors. It is a strong view in government that the
speeding up of the Occupational Health services would address the inequities of the past that were characterised by the negation of some
categories of workers.

The Department of Health has committed itself to the health and safety of its employees as well as its service beneficiaries in terms of
the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act No 85 of 1993. It also seeks to ensure that systems of monitoring violators of the
legislation are in place and used by anyone concerned about his/her work environment.

The launch continues until 23 March 2001 where senior officials both from government and academic institutions are expected to give their
inputs on what the programme entails. Among the dignitaries expected to speak are the Provincial Health MEC - Dr Bevan Goqwana, Dr Barry
Kistnasamy on Tertiary Institutions and Occupational Health as well as the Eastern Cape Director General, Dr Mvuyo Tom.

Delegates from other provinces will grace the ceremony and also share their experiences in dealing with the matter.

Your institution is, hereby, invited to send representatives to cover this event. It is at the Bisho Skenjana hall and is scheduled to
start at 9H00.
